Everything you need to know about D&D 5e hit point calculations

At 1st level, you get the maximum value of your hit die plus your Constitution modifier. For each level after that, you can either:

  • Roll your hit die and add your Constitution modifier
  • Take the average (rounded up) plus your Constitution modifier

This calculator shows you the average, minimum, and maximum possible HP for any combination.

Your Constitution modifier is derived from your Constitution ability score:

Score 8-9: -1 modifier
Score 10-11: +0 modifier
Score 12-13: +1 modifier
Score 14-15: +2 modifier

For every 2 points above 10, you get +1 modifier. For every 2 points below 10, you get -1 modifier.

Our calculator has all classes pre-configured with the correct hit die, so you don't need to remember these!

Short answer: Not directly, but you can use it effectively for multiclass characters.

How to calculate multiclass HP:

  1. Calculate HP for each class level separately
  2. Add all the results together
  3. Use the hit die that corresponds to each specific class level

For example, for a Fighter 3 / Wizard 2, calculate Level 3 Fighter HP + Level 2 Wizard HP and add them together.
